Who We Are

On September 9, 1963, Southland Federal Credit Union received its charter from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Founded by just seven members and initially operating out of a home, the credit union began by serving employees and family members of the Southland Paper Mill in Lufkin, Texas. By the end of its first year, membership had grown to 205, with total assets reaching $3,004.25.

After four decades of dedicated service to the Southland Paper Mill community, the credit union faced a significant transition when the mill announced its closure. In response, the Board of Directors took proactive steps to ensure continued growth and sustainability. In October 2003, Southland Federal Credit Union expanded its field of membership by converting it to a community charter. This allowed eligibility to extend to individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in, as well as businesses and other legal entities located in, Angelina County, Texas.

In early 2004, the credit union further expanded through the merger with Houston-Trinity County Teachers Federal Credit Union. This partnership broadened membership eligibility to include Houston and Trinity Counties while retaining all existing members from the merged institution. The merger also provided two locations, enhancing accessibility and service for members.

Continuing its commitment to growth and member service, in 2005 the Board of Directors purchased land for new facilities located at 1524 E. Houston Avenue in Crockett, Texas, and 2601 S. John Redditt Drive in Lufkin, Texas. Staff transitioned to these modern locations later that year, ensuring the credit union could effectively meet the evolving needs of its expanding membership.

As of July 31, 2025, Southland Federal Credit Union has grown to over $85.3 million in total assets and proudly serves more than 7,800 members. We remain financially strong and committed to providing a safe, secure, and reliable place for our members’ financial needs.
